Story of Dhanteras

Once, Lord Vishnu was preparing to descend to Earth. Goddess Lakshmi insisted on accompanying Him. Despite Lord Vishnu’s refusal, she persisted. Finally, Lord Vishnu said, “If you promise to follow my instructions, you may come.” She agreed, and they descended to Earth together. Lord Vishnu told her, “I’m heading south. Do not come in that direction until I return.” Then He departed. Unable to understand the gravity of His words, Goddess Lakshmi wandered towards the south. She came upon a mustard field and was enchanted by its greenery. She adorned herself with mustard flowers and continued walking. Soon, she found a sugarcane field, enjoyed its sweetness, and moved ahead. At that moment, Lord Vishnu appeared and became furious at her disobedience.

Angrily, He said, “You have stolen the crops. As punishment, you must serve the farmer whose sugarcane you consumed for 12 years.” Then Lord Vishnu returned to Vaikuntha.

Goddess Lakshmi, taking the form of a poor woman, went to the farmer and requested to stay as a maid. The farmer agreed. With Lakshmi’s arrival, his home started flourishing day and night. After 12 years, Lord Vishnu returned to fetch Goddess Lakshmi. But the farmer refused to let her go, believing her presence brought prosperity.

Goddess Lakshmi told the farmer and his wife, “Tomorrow is Dhanteras. Worship my idol properly and keep a pot filled with coins. I shall reside in that pot.” The farmer followed her instructions, and his wealth continued to grow. It is believed that anyone who hears this story on Dhanteras is blessed with wealth and happiness.
