My friends and family frequently ask me to accompany them to museums because I am an art historian.  Naturally, I’m always happy.  A happy location for me is museums.  However, I am aware that museums & art galleries in Sydney may be scary to many individuals.  

They believe they need a guide to help them understand these sites or permission to enter the sacred halls of culture. 

 This blog is for anyone who wants some advice on how to truly appreciate the museum or gallery experience without breaking the bank, feeling exhausted and dizzy, or getting ejected by security. I see people making the same mistakes I used to do when I visit museums with other people.

Considerations for Visiting a Modern Art Gallery and Museum 

 When you visit a modern art exhibition, you may be thinking what to bring.  There are certain broad guidelines to follow, but each gallery has its own set of regulations.

 The majority of galleries forbid food and beverages within the exhibition area.  No coffee cups, water bottles, or snacks are allowed.  In addition to being a visual feast, the artwork in the gallery will leave you with something to think about!  

Ask the gallery ahead of time if you need to bring food or beverages, or make plans to dine before or after your visit.

Look Around And See What Attracts Your Attention 

 When most people walk into a gallery with images hanging on it, they often begin on one side of the door and attempt to look at each one as they move around the space.  It’s not a good idea.  Why?  

Because the image on the other side of the room can be the one that interests you the most.  By the time you reach that photo, you will be more tired of being the center of attention than if you had originally arrived at your favorite.

I try to look around the area as soon as I go in to see if there are any items that capture my attention.  “My daughter looks a lot like that little portrait of the girl!”  

Then, ignoring everything else, I daringly walk across the room to that image on the right.  I might or might not return to the other items later.  This does not make me feel guilty in the least.

No Big Bags

Generally speaking, big bags and backpacks are not permitted within the galleries.  Large bags can obstruct views of artwork and make it difficult for other visitors to walk about, therefore this is done for both practical and security reasons.  

Choose a tiny pocketbook or bag that you can handle with ease if you must bring one.

Don’t Take Too Many Photos 

However, if you enjoy a piece of art and want to preserve it, do snap a picture of it.  To learn more about the image later, take a photograph of the label as well.  Don’t snap pictures of everything, though.  

Since the majority of collections are now accessible online, this is totally superfluous and detracts from paying attentive attention to the artwork.

Before You Access The Gallery, Turn Off Your Phone

Using a phone in public is not only impolite, but it may also bother other patrons and ruin the gallery’s peaceful ambiance.  Go outside the display area first if you have to answer a call.

 Know When To Return Home

 Respecting my physical and mental boundaries was the most important thing I took away from my experiences working in museums and visiting them.

 Enjoyment cannot be forced; simply take a break or complete your adventure if you become weary or overwhelmed by a visit.  Write a few lines in your journal or go home and snooze.  

Depending on the museum’s size and your level of energy on the day of the visit, I find that the perfect museum tour lasts between one and three hours.

 Many individuals feel obligated to “see everything” when they visit museums, particularly the larger ones.  I’m sorry to break the news to you, though. 

The nightmare of a completionist is a museum.  Focus on what you enjoy and acknowledge that not everything can be seen since there is no such thing as seeing everything.

Bonus Tip: Excellent Walking Shoes

 To enjoy your stay without worrying about your feet, choose comfy shoes.  It may surprise you to learn that wearing comfortable walking shoes is one of the most crucial things you can do when you visit a modern art exhibition.  

It’s true, though!  You’ll probably be wandering around a lot because many modern museums & art galleries in Sydney are rather vast.  Wearing suitable clothing is another crucial consideration.  It’s advisable to confirm the dress code before visiting some galleries.  

However, you should always try to dress decently even if there isn’t a dress code at the museum.

• Wear comfortable and well-fitting clothing so that you don’t have to worry about your feet.
• Take your time and enjoy your visit.
• Take your time exploring the gallery.
